When "A Retrieved Reformation" begins, Jimmy Valentine is a career criminal. After receiving a pardon and being released from prison, he proceeds to return to his criminal ways. This all changes when he comes to Elmore and then catches sight of Annabel Adams. Falling for the young woman, at this point, he decides to give up his life of crime and turn himself into a law abiding citizen. He opens a shoe business, becomes a respected member of the community, and the two are even engaged to be married. Then, in the end of the story, his criminal past returns, this time in a genuinely heroic context. When a young child is locked inside the bank vault, Jimmy breaks into it in order to free her....♡
