DESCRIPTION OF THE LIFE OF UNTOUCHABLES IN THE ANCIENT PERIOD.
- Untouchables in the ancient period lived relatively marginal lives outside the four-tiered caste system.
- They were ostracized from the rest of the Hindu society, denied basic rights, and were required to live in separate settlements from the rest of the population.
- They were relegated to the most menial, degrading and hazardous jobs, such as tanning, leatherworking, and disposing of dead animals.
- Untouchables were made to endure relentless discrimination, abuse, and exploitation.
- They were forced to pay extra taxes, barred from temples and forbidden to use public pathways.
- Very little protection was given to them and no assistance was provided to improve their status or well-being.
