Chawls were the multi storeyed structure built and owned by landlords such as merchant, banker and building contractors. Each chawls was divided into small one room tenements.

1. No private toilet. Many families could reside at a time in tenements.

2. people used to keep window closed because of the close proximity to the filthy putter, buffaloes stable etc.

3. Chawls were also a place for exchanging news of strike ,demonstrations, riots etc.
