Ladakh ("land of high passes") is a region in northern India presently a part of the State of Jammu and Kashmir and soon to an Union territory from 31st October,2019 as per the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act 2019. It is located between the Kunlun mountain range in the north and the main Himalayas to the south.

Ladakh is a cold desert. It is known as 'khapa-chan' which means snowland. It is located in the eastern part of Jammu and Kashmir. The total area is about 45,110 sq km. The total population is about three lakh. Ladakh is surrounded by the Karakoram range in the north and the Zaskar range in the south.
