The Maurya Empire was one of the greatest empires in Indian history.

The Mauryan Empire was divided into five important political centres, including a capital city known as Patliputra, and other important provincial centres of  Taxila, Ujjayini, Tosali and Suvarnagiri. The empire was divided in these provincial centres to keep the rule of government strong. In order to keep a direct check on the provincial centres, Ashoka Maurya made six councils with five members in each who assisted the provincial governors known as the Kumaras(royal prince).

During the time of the Mauryan empire in India, the farmers (for the first time in the history of South Asia) were freed from taxes. The strong army of the Mauryan's wiped out many regional private armies and powerful chieftains, who wanted to establish their supremacy in small areas.  Mauryans implemented a strict taxation as guided by the Arthshastra, but they also sponsored many public works to enhance the crop productivity and trade.
