a single variety of crop does not possess all the desirable charecteristics .thus, it is necessary to improve crop variety . this is done to get better varieties of crops with desired qualities . two fundamental approaches are adopted to get the desirable characteristics in a single variety

Mechanism of crop variety improvement are-:
i. HYBRIDIZATION - it is a process of crossing between two or more genetically dissimilar plants to produce a new variety with good properties of both the crops.
ii. GENETIC IMPROVEMENT-: In genetic improvement, genes of crops are modified so that desired properties are retained and undesirable properties are suppressed.
