●Mechanism. Inhalation begins with the contraction of the muscles attached to the rib cage; this causes an expansion in the chest cavity.

●Then takes place the onset of contraction of the diaphragm, which results in expansion of the intrapleural space and an increase in negative pressure according to Boyle's law.

●In order for air to be drawn into the lungs during inhalation the volume of the thorax must increase.

●Inhalation is now complete and the next step isexhalation. The diaphragm relaxes and moves up and the relaxation of the intercostal muscles moves the ribs in and down.

during inhalation:::

the intercoastal muscles contract and the ribs move upward and outward...the diaghragm contracts and flattened which thereby increases the volume of thoracic cavity...this increase in volume decreases the pressure in the thoracic cavity and the atmospheric air is sucked in the lungs by the respiratory tract and lungs expand this is inhalation..

during exhalation the opposite of this takes place.... intercoastal muscles relax and rib moves downward and inwards and diaghragm moves to its original done shaped position.this decreases volume of chest cavity and increases pressure thereby forcing air in the lungs to flow out by the respiratory tract...for more information bout the same contact me..
