To describe a system of seasonal reversal of winds along the shores of Indian Ocean especially over Arabian Sea in which the wind blows from SW to NE during summer and NE to SW during winter .in other words monsoons are periodic winds in which there is a complete reversal of wind direction every six months .

As u know monsoons r basically land n sea breezes on a large scale the sun shines over head the Tropic of Cancer from march to may.

By the end of the may the differential heating of land and sea brings about a seasonal low pressure trough cantered between Thar Desert and Chitanagpur

As a result a high pressure gradient builds up between north India with intense low pressure and cooler water bodies surrounding it with high pressure .the low pressure area attaracts south east trade winds blowing in southern hhemisphere as such after crossing equator these winds are deflected towards the Indian subcontinent as south west monsoon winds they pick up moisture from Arabian Sea.

Usually Kerala is the first and last state to recieve the rains and the whole of India gets rain by 15th July.

Hope it helps
