the monthly flow of blood and tissue from the uterus lining of an adolescent female is referred to as menstruation

the ovary produces one ovum per month. if the ovum gets fertilised by a sperm and forms a zygote, the zygote develops into the embryo which gets embedded in the uterus wall for further development. the thick uterus lining is formed so as to receive the fertilised zygote and to protect the embryo for proper development. but if the ovum is not fertilised, the uterus lining is shed off in the form of blood and tissue.

this process is termed as menstrual cycle.
