In India the Scientific forestry started in 1860’s, when Sir D Brandis was appointed as first Inspector General of India. (). The forest management based on scientific, technical and economic principles is what scientific forestry. It also included identification of Forestry species (), understanding their silviculture , the system of their tending , harvesting and regeneration (Silvicultural system) so that the forest resources can be utilized in perpetuity with a sustainable harvest periodically.

So primarily the scientific (traditional) forestry was focused on Timber species alone, however in present times the wildlife/ biodiversity wing too got importance especially 1970’s onwards. The wildlife sanctuaries, National Parks, Biosphere reserves, tiger reserves, and other protected areas are also manged on scientific principles and as wildlife is integral part of forests, therefore it is also scientific forestry.

Scientific forestry is the science of managing forests and tree plantations. Natural forests with different types of trees were cut down and replaced with one type of tree planted in rows known as plantation. The forests were surveyed by officials according to areas under different types of trees and plans were made for forest management. A portion of the plantation area was cut down every year and replanted so that it was available to be used within a few years.
