Agriculture was the chief means of livelihood of the later Vedic people.
During this time rice and wheat became their chief crops. Other agricultural products were barley, cotton and various pulses.
Cattle rearing was second important occupation of the Aryans.
Money lending was a flourishing business during the Aryans.
The varnas mentioned in the Rig Veda were not hereditary and could be interchanged. The four varnas or classes are as follows:
1. The Brahmins were the priests
2. The Kshatiryas were the rulers and warriors
3. The Vaishyas were the traders
4. The Shudras served the other three groups
However,over a period of time, it became difficult for people to move out of the varna they were born into. The system was no longer based on one's profession. It had become hereditary.
