The old Urban areas of India:
The old ‘urban areas of India’ can be described as small cities with walls running all around them. Due to this, the old urban areas were also known as 'walled cities'. In order to enter into the city, there were gates, commonly known as 'Darwazas'.
For example, in Ahmedabad, there are Delhi Darwaza, Lal Darwaza, Teen Darwaza, etc. These an be termed as the entrances to the walled city of Ahmedabad. Likewise, Shahjahanabad (the walled ‘city of Delhi’) had many gates.
