The climate of India is strongly influenced by the monsoon winds. The monsoons are not permanent winds like the trades or westerlies. These are seasonal winds and blow for about 100 to 120 days in a year, i. e. , from early June to mid September. The monsoons develop mainly due to variable atmospheric conditions on land and the waterbodies.

(a) Around the time of the arrival of the monsoon winds, the normal amount of rainfall increases suddenly and continues for many days. This is called the BURST of the monsoons. It can be distinguished from the pre - monsoon showers.

(b) The monsoon winds reach the southern part of Kerala on the western coast of India in the first week of June. Before moving northwards, they are divided into two branches - the Arabian Sea branch and the Bay of Bengal branch.

(c) The Arabian Sea branch rapidly moves northwards and reaches Mumbai within 10 days. In another ten days, it crosses Saurashtra, the Kachchh region and Central India.

(d) The Bay of Bengal branch also moves rapidly to reach Assam in about 10 days. After giving heavy rains, a part of it is deflected towards the Gangetic plains.

(e) The Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal branches of monsoon winds meet each other near Delhi in the last week of June.

(f) The combined monsoon winds moves further into Western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Eastern Rajasthan in the first week of July.

(g) The monsoon winds reach almost every part of India by the middle of July.
