The working principle of a Carnot cycle is the same as any heat engine, but in Carnot’s time, nobody could figure a way to calculate what the maximum efficiency of a heat engine would be. Carnot conceived of this idealized cycle because at each of the 4 stages of the cycle you can write equations for the work and heat transfers.
The equations apply only to a “reversible process,” which is hard to explain briefly, but one characteristic, as others have said, is that it operates infinitely slowly.
