The Outbreak Of Revolution In France

  • Assembly of estates general.

On 5th May 1789, Louis 16 called for an assembly of Estates General to pass new proposals for new taxes. First, Second and Third estates sent their representatives. First and second estates sent 300 representatives each, who were seated by facing each other on two opposite sides. The third estate sent the most prosperous and educated representatives, but they faced discrimination and had to stand at the back.

Peasants, artisans and women were denied the entry into the hall. So they sent their grievances with the representatives of the third estate. The third estate demanded that voting should be conducted by taking the assembly as a whole, their demand wasn't fulfilled and the third estate walked out of the assembly in protest.

  • National assembly of third estate.

On 26th June, 1789 the representatives of the third estate met at an indoor tennis court in Versailles. They declared themselves as a national assembly and swore that they would draft a new constitution for France that would limit the powers of the monarch. These representatives were led by Mirabeau and Abbe Sieyes.

  • Outbreak Of Revolution At Bastille.

On 14th July, 1789 an agitated crowd destroyed Bastille. The Bastille was hated by all because it symbolised the despotic power of the king. Rumors spread on the countryside that the lords of the manor had sent bands of brigands to destroy ripe crops. Hearing to this rumor, many peasants attacked many places in France. Being terrified seeing all this, many nobles moved to neighboring countries.

So, this was how the revolution of France was started with the destruction of Bastille.
