A phenomenon associated with the monsoon is its trend to breaks in the rain. It applies to dry and wet seasons. In other words, the monsoon rainfalls take place only for some days at a season. They are distributed at rain-less interludes.

These breaks in monsoon are because of the shift of the monsoon trough. The monsoon channel exhibits a periodical shift to the north or south of its natural setting. When the channel moves towards the north and prevails close to the Himalayas, there is a change in the precipitation pattern of India. The rains take abruptly covering the lowlands of North India and expand quickly over the foothills of North India. This phenomenon is recognized as breaks in monsoon rainfall.
