in the world. Being almost entirely covered by an ice-glacier, it differs from every other continent except the Artic. In this essay you will learn about the continent and its many physical characteristics such as: Ice, mountains coastal regions. Not only does all the ice make this continent so unique, but also the position of the continent on the globe. Antarctica is placed at what would classify the bottom of the planet, in the Southern Pole. It wasn’t always positioned at the bottom of the planet, if fact when all the continents were joined millions of years ago, Antarctica was considered the centre of Gondwana. It is surrounded by the Southern ocean. It is the fifth largest continent on Earth, and 98% of it is covered in ice. This means that most of the world’s water is kept frozen in the most southern part of the Earth. As majority of people know, Antarctica is very famous for its ice. The ice cap that covers this continent, is more than two kilometers thick (2100 meters). That means that 61% of Earth’s fresh water is held in Antarctica's ice sheet. Although Antarctica only gets about two inches of rain per year, it is its location that allows if to stay freezing and continue to keep all this ice frozen. The weight of Antarctica’s ice is so massive and heavy that it has actually pushed land under water in some areas of the continent. Antarctica has some of the largest mountain ranges.
