The Himalayas are the young fold mountains which are the loftiest and one of the most rugged mountain barriers of the world.

They are 2400 km long, 1500 km ride from Kashmir to Arunachal Pradesh respectively.

The Himalayas have three parallel ranges in the longitudinal extent namely:

HIMADRI :

☣️The greater Himalayas are known by the name HIMADRI. These are the loftiest mountain ranges in the world. The average height of Himadri is about 6100 metres.

☣️Some of the important mountain peaks in Himadri are as follows:

Mount Everest, - 8848 m above the mean sea level

Kanchenjunga - 8598 m above mean sea level

Makalu - 8481 metre above mean sea level

Annapurna - 8078 m above mean sea level

☣️The folds of the great Himalayas are asymmetrical in nature.

☣️The core of this part of Himalayas is composed of granite.

☣️It is always snowbound.

☣️A number of glacier descend from this range.

HIMACHAL

☣️Mountain lying to the south of the Himadri are known as lesser Himalayas or Himachal.

☣️Average height of this range varies between 3700 to 4500 metres from the sea level.

☣️The average width is 50 km.

☣️All hill station belong to this range.
They are:

✡️ Dalhousie ( Himachal Pradesh)

✡️Dharamshala ( Himachal Pradesh)

✡️Shimla ( Himachal Pradesh)

✡️Mussoorie (Uttarakhand)

✡️Nainital ( Uttarakhand)

✡️Darjeeling (West Bengal).

☣️The following ranges also belong to Himachal Pradesh:

✡️Pir Panjal in Kashmir

✡️ Dhaula Dhar in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh

✡️ Mahabharat range of Nepal

☣️The Kashmir Valley, and the Kangra and Kullu valleys are located here.

SHIWALIK :

☣️The South Western range of the Himalayas is known as shiwaliks. These are also called sub Himalayas or outer Himalayas.

☣️Shivaliks are the youngest of the Himalayan family. The height of the hills varies between 900 to 1100 m. They extend over a width of 10-50 km. This range is discontinuous.

☣️Shivaliks are made of unconsolidated river deposits. They are prone to earthquakes and landslides.

☣️The longitudinal valleys lying between lesser Himalayas and the shivaliks are known as Duns. Dehra duns, Kotli Dun and Patli Dun are some of the well-known duns.

The Himalayas have been divided on the basis of regions from the west to the East. These divisions have been demarcated by river valleys.

1. Punjab Himalaya :

The part of the Himalayas lying between the Indus and the Satluj river is called Punjab Himalaya.

2. Kumaon Himalaya :

The part of the Himalayas lying between Satluj and Kali rivers is known as Kumaon Himalayas.

3. Nepal Himalaya :

The Kali and Tista river demarcate the Nepal Himalayas.

4. Assam Himalaya :

The part of the Himalayas lying between Tista and Dihang rivers demarcate The Assam Himalayas.
