The President is the nominal head. He as some discretionary powers are:-
.) The President appoints the PM when a party or coalition of parties secure a clear majority in elections, the President has to appoint the leader of the majority party or the coalition that enjoys majority support in Lok Sabha.
.) When no party or coalition gets a majority in the Lok Sabha, the President exercises his/her discretion. The President appoints a leader who in his/her opinion can get majority support in the Lok Sabha. In such a case, the President can ask the newly appointed PM to prove a majority support in the Lok Sabha within a specific time.
.) All imp agreements are made in his name.
.) He is the supreme Commander of 3 forces - air, navy and army.
