The reaction between an acid and a base is known as neutralisation. Salt and water are produced in this process with the evolution of heat. Antacids like milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide), baking soda, etc.

Neutralization

The phenomena in which acid and base react together to form salt and water thereby neutralizing each other is known as neutralization.

  • They good also cancel each other effect.

Example

  • HCl(aq) + KOH(aq) → H 2O(l) + KCl(aq)

Here hydrochloric acid reacts with potassium hydroxide they both neutralize each other and therefore water and potassium chloride are produced.

Daily life use

  • When we have a quick glance and its usage in the field of medicine a common problem of acidity faced by people is cured using this neutralization phenomena.

  • The acid produced in our stomach is usually cured by taking an antacid that is made up of basic components . earlier magnesium hydroxide was taken and it is basic in nature.

Extra information

  • acid always has a lower PH less than 7.

  • Bases has pH more than 7.

  • The product formed that is water has pH of 7 and is neutral in nature.
