Atomic number is actually the number of protons in an atom while mass number is the number of nucleons i. e, number of protons plus the number of neutrons.

Basically, Mass number = Atomic number + No. of neutrons

Explanation:

Atomic No.-Z(no. of protons present)

Mass No.-A(no. of protons+neutrons present)

A-Z=no. of neutrons present

Mass no. refers to the weight of the atom whereas atomic no. is referred as the no. of electrons in outermost shell.

For eg. Oxygen's mass no. is 16 and atomic no. 6
