Maxwell and otter were very amicable towards each other. Initially, Otter was a little hesitant but he developed a bond of friendship with the author in just 24 hours. Maxwell was very doting towards otter.
He treated him like his own child. He took him for exercise. He got him rubber fruits, marbles, rubber balls and terrapin shell to play.
He was aware of Otter's fondness for water so he took him to the bathtub to play in the water. Maxwell was very caring and responsible as he was horrified when he saw blood on the box in which Otter was packed.
Otter also found comfort around Maxwell as he would sleep gladly in the crook of Maxwell's knees.
