The two boys, Nicola and Jacopo, lost their father in a war. They were too young at that time; still they had immense patience, maturity and strength of mind to handle their adverse situation. They were childish yet matured. To the author Jacopo was a lively squirrel. They were not only kind and caring towards other, but were also helpful. They took care of their younger sister Lucia after the death of their father. The two boys were very industrious and honest. They never believed in cheating someone for their own benefits. They always maintained a positive attitude towards their life. Thus, despite the fact that the two boys had a shabby appearance because of their dirty clothes; still they were the true gentlemen and the real heroes according to the author.
