Gavaskar's father was a cricketer himself and his mother was also interested in the sport - ensuring that cricket was in his blood, in a manner of speaking. However, it is not only his parents who contributed to his career and made him the legend that he went on to become. Had it not been for Narayan Masurekar, Gavaskar would have had a different childhood altogether. After he was born, the nurses bathed him and mistakenly lay him with a fisherman's family who also had had a baby that day. The 'eagle-eyed' Masurekar made the distinction by a hole on the top of Gavaskar's left ear lobe, and thereby restored to his proper family. The other person who was crucial to his becoming one of the best cricketers of all time was Madhav Mantri, his uncle. He had played for India in four test matches and had autographed trophies of the 1952 India and England teams. The young Gavaskar dreamed about a cricketing future as he lingered over those autographs while he browsed through the trophies. Mantri also had his team pullovers which he was in a habit of nostalgically caress from time to time. When Gavaskar asked for one, he had said that one would have to earn the honour of wearing the colours of India. This lesson, that there is no short cut to cricketing glory, was foundational in Gavaskar's education.
