Transportation through Ports was earlier costly, as there were heavy and bulky goods that had to be kept in the port before the transfer to the ship.  This increased the port handling costs.  However now, there are special containers made in which the goods can be easily stored and transported without much loading and unloading too.   Even the port handling costs have declined drastically due to the innovation of these special Containers.

The most prominent development is the improvement in transportation technology which has made the delivery of goods over long distance possible at a lower cost in a shorter duration of time.
