It is a system of catching rainwater where it falls. In rooftop harvesting, the roof becomes the catchments, and the rainwater is collected from the roof of the house/building. It can either be stored in a tank or diverted to artificial recharge system. This method is less expensive and very effective and if implemented properly helps in augmenting the ground water level of the area.

Rooftop rainwater harvesting: People living in arid regions of Rajasthan and Gujrat, where rainfall is scanty, have used rooftop rainwater harvesting systems since many years to store drinking water.

Process of rooftop rainwater harvesting is given below:

a) Rainwater falling on the roof is collected through PVC pipes.

b) The collected water is filtered by passing it through a layer of sand and bricks.

c) The filtered water is then collected through an underground pipe in a sump.

d) Excess water in the sump is then collected in the well that gets recharged with fresh water.
