Literally translated to English, the phrase means "Immortal Soldier Flame". As suggested by the name, the Amar Jawan Jyoti is a homage paid to all Indian soldiers who have lost their lives guarding the nation.

The construction of the monument began after the Indo-Pak was of 1971, in which the Indian army suffered casualties. Inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the monument seeks to express gratitude for the sacrifices made by the soldiers.
