We can get to know the importance of Textile Industry by just looking around our house.  Every part of our house will have textiles.  A man requires, “Food, warmth and clothing” and textile industry plays a major role in all the three.  It also helps in every field.  Write from our brush to blanket, textile industry has a role to play. 

30 to 35 percent of Industrial production goes from Textile Industry and that too from Cotton Textiles.  Around 35 to 55 million people are directly employed by T.I. The contribution of Foreign exchange is around 24.6% and GDP is around 4%.  Cotton Textiles plays a major role because it has to produce for both India and for export.  Most of the Southern regions of India are engaged in Cotton Textiles either as a production unit or as a garment industry.

Cotton textile unit was first established near Kolkata in 1818 but that was shut down due to dearth of finance.  Later it was started in Mumbai in 1859.  When Gandhiji boycotted all the foreign synthetic clothes through Swadeshi Movement in 1905, Indian textiles started flourishing and after the independence, the growth was good.
