Harpy in The Tempest by William Shakespeare is part woman, part vulture, and a harbinger of death/torment. It is actually Aerial who is Harpy. Ariel is Prospero's servant spared from a lengthy prison term at the hands of Sycorax witch until Prospero frees him. He is mischievous and and ubiquitous, and can instantaneously traverse the length of the island and change  shapes at his will. He does about every job Prospero wants to do in the play

Explanation:

  • The presence of Ariel as an avenging Harpy marks the culmination of Prospero's retribution when Antonio, Alonso and the other members  are confronted with their crimes and threatened with punishment. From the view of Prospero, the Ariel disguised as Harpy reflects justice and natural powers. He came to remedy the wrongs tthat was done to Prospero, and to punish the wicked for their sins.
  • The audience learns, though, that Ariel is not a greater spiritual force or an god, but rather just  mouths the script that Prospero taught Aerial. Of reality, the only true goal of Ariel is to gain Prospero's freedom. Thus, the vision of justice presented in this scene is artificial and staged
  • Ariel is the one who performs the most music in Prospero. He has his own talents, but they are not natural, they are learned. Ariel would begin to take sympathy on the King and his family, if he were human, in the wake of Prospero's proposal. This is the last moment we see them before the final scene, and so this is the height of their despair. The audience must see Ariel seeing them at the point of presumed death to start to accept their repentance.
  • By appearing as a Harpy, Ariel is showing the disparity between the imaginary and the real. As a mythical creature with a vulture’s wings and claws and the face of a woman, Ariel is part of the theatre of what Prospero is doing, that is, disorientating his enemies by manipulating the action and setting up  a kind of madness in the 3 men who had harmed him in the past.
