The conquest of poverty has been a persistent and sustained effort since the beginning of planning of India. Success has been elusive despite direct attacks to remove poverty.


A variety of employment initiatives have been introduced . Agriculture was the main source of livelihood for most people and it engaged about two-third of the total population.

The National Average of population living below the poverty line is 26% , leaving 260 millions in this condition. poverty remains a very major concern of the nation.

Over the years , India has made substantial progress in human development. Sustained and high economic growth in the post-reform period reduced poverty ratio significantly. There was also noteworthy improvement in the literacy rates over time leading to a decline in the absolute number of illiterates.

The greater challenge is that of providing quality education, health care, job , shelter, security, gender equality , freedom from child exploitation, caste discrimination..
