Answer:

Let's see here, firstly we have iron filings which happen to be magnetic, I'm sure you can see where this is going - use the magnet to remove the iron filings (you probably want to cover the magnet with a plastic bag for easy iron filing removal) so now we are left with the salt and sand, you would want to put water into the salt and sand mixture so that the salt will dissolve (you may want to use warm/hot water so it dissolves faster?) now you want to filter the mixture, in my science classes we would always use a funnel lined with filter paper in some strange fold so that the mixture couldn't escape. Finally, you should be left with a filtrate (the dissolved salt in water) and a residue (the sand), you would want to now place the filtrate in an evaporating basin, here you should leave it for a few days, you are now have separated the iron filings, sand and salt.

Quick Method:

Use a magnet to remove the iron filings

Add water to the salt and sand mixture to dissolve the salt

Pass the salt and sand mixture through a filter

Allow the liquid from the sand, salt mixture that you got through the filtration to evaporate leaving the salt

Marvel at the separated iron, salt and sand
