Mitochondria is a double membranous structure. The outer membrane covers the organelle and contain it like a skin . The inner membrane folds over many times and creates layered structure called cristae. The folds increase the surface area of the membrane which is important because the inner membrane holds the proteins involved in the electron transport chain.
