The name nephron is from the Greek word for kidney. A kidney is in fact and aggregation of about 1 million nephrons. Renal nephrons are primary control devices of kidney function. The Nephron primarily consists of a group of a blood vessels and assorted tubules including: the proximal straight tubule, descending and ascending thin, distal straight tubules and distal convoluted tubules; located in the nephron loop. Functions include: The regulation of blood volume, blood pressure, and metabolites. Additionally performed the primary task of filtering the blood, separating nutrients for reabsorbtion, and waste for excretion. The entire fluid balance of the body is dependent upon nephron function.

Inside the kidneys are a number of pyramid-shaped lobes. Each consists of an outer renal cortex and an inner renal medulla. Nephrons flow between these sections. These are the urine-producing structures of the kidneys.
