T.S of the spinal cord:

  • The shape of the spinal cord is cylindrical but in dorso ventral direction it appears flattened.
  • It is covered by three layers namely Dura mater, arachnoid mater and pia mater externally.
  • It posses two fissures namely deep ventral and shallow dorsal.
  • Dorsal septum extends from the dorsal fissure and posses a cavity called the central canal.
  • It is lined by ependymal cells and is located in the 4th ventricle of the brain and is composed of cerebro-spinal fluid.
  • The surrounding region of the central canal is found with grey matter.
  • The grey matter gives ‘H’ shaped appearance due to the presence of two horns like structures present in dorsolateral as well as ventrolateral regions.
  • The grey matter is enclosed by the white matter which gives a three- layered arrangement called funiculi in all three directions.
