Tissue culture is the in-vitro growth or culture of a tissue or cells of plants or animals by using an artificial medium of cells that is derived from a living tissue. The term “Tissue culture” was coined by Montrose Thomas Burrows, an American pathologist.

The growth medium can either be a liquid medium like broth, or semi-solid or solid medium like agar.

For growing plants, it is specifically called as plant tissue culture, and for animals, it is called animal tissue culture.

In plant tissue culture, small pieces of plant tissue are cultured in medium to grow full plants.

In animals, the cells are taken from an organ or organism and are grown in 2D monolayers or as 3D tissue like structures.

Tissue culture is an important modern tool that is useful to study the biology of the cells from multi-cellular organisms, which can be easily analyzed and manipulated.
