India has  a very low literacy rate as compared to world average & its neighboring countries.There has been a continuous growth in the literacy rate,but it has not achieved the mark yet.There is a huge gender disparity among the female literacy rate & male literacy rate.According to census 2001,the national literacy rate of India was 64.81% with female literacy rate at 53.66% & male literacy rate at 75.24%.The gender disparity was 21.58%.There has been a substantial growth in the literacy rate of India.According to census 2011 the national literacy rate grew up to 74.04%.There has been a decade growth of 9.2%.The gap between female literacy has also come down to 16.68%.The female literacy rate as on census 2011 was 65.46% whereas male literacy rate stood at 82.14%.
