Based on area covered, there are four types of networks - LAN, PAN, MAN and WAN.

  • A computer network is a collection of two or more computers which are interconnected and share resources. Data transmission can occur within all the nodes in a computer network.
  • LAN(Local Area Network) is a small network of computers generally spanning over a small building or official premises.
  • PAN(Personal Area Network) is an arrangement belonging to a single person, spanning not more than 10 meters.
  • MAN(Metropolitan Area Network)  covers a large geographical area, spreading over an entire city, consists of a number of interconnected LANs. Usually owned by Governments or city administration.
  • WAN(Wide Area Network) covers the largest geographical distance, covering states and entire length and breadth of a country. For e.g. Railway network in a country like India.
