A beggar. He earns a little by telling lies and thus evoking sympathy in his listeners. One day he comes across Sergei, who does not give him alms but offers to give him work. Lushkoff is weak and unwilling to do the laborious job of chopping wood. But the job is somehow done. He gives up begging. Years later when Sergei comes across Lushkoff, he is no longer a beggar but a respectable notary. Then he discloses the fact that it was Sergei’s maidservant who had chopped the wood for him. This act of her kindness had influenced him so much that his whole life was changed.

The beggar is based on the idea that kindness is a virtue. It can bring about a real change of heart in even a very stubborn person. lushkoff is very lazy person who does not want want to work hard to earn his living. So he resorts to begging. He is a drunkard too. Moreover,he is unwilling to work. When Sergei, a kind hearted fellow, offers him to his home quite unwilling. It is at his home that he learns what kindness is. Sergei's cook Olga chops woods for him when he shows unwillingness to do work. She scoots him but does everything for him without letting Sergei be aware of it. Her selfless acts of kindness change the heart of Lushkoff. When the opportunity arises, he begins to work hard. Sergei learns after two years that he has begun to earn a decent living as a notary.......
