Mr. Van Daan was a business associate of Mr. Frank who moved into the Annexe with his family. His wife, Mrs. Van Daan was self centered, flirtatious, and not very smart. She and Anne were always fighting. Peter was their 15 year old son who was friendly with Anne. His cat Mouschi also stayed with them in the Annexe.

Anne felt that she lived in "paradise" compared to other Jews who were not hiding. But the life in hiding was pretty boring. They learnt to appreciate the fact that they had the basic facilities of life, like being able to go to the bathroom when they want, or to take a walk, or get a good night's sleep. Anne found it frustrating that the Annexe was her world. Her moods would go up and down.
