The Van Daan couple and their son hide along with the Franks in the Annexe. Mrs. Van Daan was a protective mother for her son Peter. She nurtured Anne also some times when Anne did not feel like confiding in her own mother. She was reasonable occasionally and was generally neat and tidy.

On the other hand she was belligerent and selfish, instigated fights and was rarely helpful. She was very moody and kept removing and locking up her belongings. She was jealous of Anne's relationship with her son, Peter and wanted him to confide in her instead of Anne.
