Bacteria are classified into 5 groups according to their basic shapes:

1. spherical (cocci)
2. rod (bacilli)
3. spiral (spirilla)
4. comma (vibrios)
5. corkscrew (spirochaetes).

They can exist as single cells, in pairs, chains or clusters.
