Types of optical recognition devices:

1. MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition):                     
                          Used by banks to read numbers written on a cheque. Special purpose machine reads character made of an ink containing magnetized particles.

2. OCR (Optical Character Recognition):                           
                        Special preprinted characters that can be read by a light source and changed into machine-readable form.Used in department stores to read retail price tags by reflecting light.

3. OMR (Optical Mark Recognition):       
              An OMR device senses the presence or absence of a mark such as a pencil mark.  Used to calculate or store multiple choice tests.

4. Intelligent character recognition (ICR):                        
              It targets handwritten print script or cursive text one glyph or character at a time, usually involving machine learning.

5. Intelligent word recognition (IWR):                                   
                       It targets handwritten print script or cursive text, one word at a time. This is especially useful for languages where glyphs are not separated in cursive script.
