the youthful stage the river is flowing fast down steep gradient, therefore there is much more evidence of erosion at this stage. A very common feature of erosion is interlocking spurs (picture) which are formed when the river meets a block of hard rock it cannot flow through or erode down. The river flows around the rock and continues down until it meets hard rock again. This forms a series of interlocking patches of land.

Another common feature at the early stage is the formation of river potholes. These are formed when the river load, pushed by hydraulic action, digs into the river bed and forms holes. Small pebbles in the river swirl around these potholes and make them bigger. They become part of the bedrock and continue to grow until the rock is too hard to erode further (diagram).
