i) The people felt that the British were destroying those socio-religious customs which were sacred to the Indians.(ii) The people of India did not like the activites of Christian missionaries. So they wanted freedom from the British rule.

Explaination :

The causes behind the revolt of 1857 were many, religion being one of them.

Prior to the revolt of 1857, there were several rumours circulating in the society.

One such rumour was the use of grease cartridges in enfeild rifles.

According to the rumour the enfeild rifles used the fat of two animals, namely cow and pig.

The hindus considered the cow to be a sacred animal and for the Muslims, the pig was a animal they wish to keep at abeyance.

So, in totality the use of grease cartridges spread like wildfire and enraged both the communities.

The other rumour that fueled the revolt of 1857 was that the East India Company was aiming to change the religion of all sepoys to Christianity.

This was again seen as a major attack on the religious sentiments of the soldiers.
