Gynoecium

Gynoecium, also called Pistil, forms the innermost whorl of the flower. It's the Female Reproductive part of the flower. It is composed of Carpel which has 3 parts; Stigma, Style and Ovary.

Stigma :- Stigma is the terminal part of a Carpel, which may be knob like or flattened, sticky or feathery, adapted to receive Pollen Grains.

Style :- Style is the slender stalk which supports the stigma and connects it to the Ovary.

Ovary :- Ovary is the swollen basal part which contains Ovules within which Female Gametes develops.

Types of Gynoecium :-

i ) Based on the Number of Carpels :

1. Monocarpellary :- Composed of a Single carpel ( i.e. either Stigma, Style or Ovary ). Examples are : Bean and Pea Flowers.

2. Bicarpellary :- Composed of Two Carpels as in Mustard Flowers.

3. Polycarpellary :- Composed of more than two Carpels as in Lady Finger Flowers.

ii) Based on the Free Carpels or Fused Carpels :

1. Apocarpous Gynoecium :- When Carpels are FREE, it is said to be Apocarpous as in rose.

2. Syncarpous Gynoecium :- When Carpels are fused, the gynoecium is called syncarpous. Examples include Mustard , China Rose etc.
