Breaking down of glucose can take place  by various routes  :Route ⑴ by means of  oxygen :

- the incidence of breaking down of glucose into pyruvate occurs in Mitochondria location of a cell.

- the products are CO₂, H₂O, and release of energy. Route ⑵ In presence of excess oxygen :

- In muscle cells, due to lack of oxygen the cells undergo a process of anaerobic respiration.

- products are Lactic acid and lot of energy emission.Route ⑶ In anaerobic or absence of Oxygen :

- In absence of Oxygen, glucose breaks to form pyruvate in cytoplasm only. Products  are Ethanol and a small amount of energy emission.

The different parts of glucose breakdown in animals are the creation of pyruvates, conversion to water and carbon dioxide and finally the transfer of energy to ATP.

Explanation:

  • Glucose breakdown is a fundamental operation in our body and our energy comes from this process.
  • In the absence of this, our bodies and the entire living world would cease to exist. The breakdown occurs in three broad phases – first is the decomposition of glucose into the structure called pyruvate.
  • This is followed by the entrance of the decomposed glucose into the mitochondria where the conversion of pyruvate to water and carbon dioxide occurs.
  • And finally, the end stage is the release of the energy to ATP molecules.
