Describe what happens when:
i) Ethene is passed through conc. H2SO4 and the product is boiled with water.
ii) Ethyl ethanoate is boiled with aqueous KOH.
iii) Alkaline solution of phenol is heated with CO2 under high pressure and then the product is acid
hydrolysed.

Answer:

I) C2H5OH (ethyl alcohol is formed)

ii) C2H5COOK + C2H5OH are formed

iii) salicylic acid is formed (C6H4)(OH)(COOH)

or, 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde is formed.
