Al Biruni was a scholar appointed by Mahmud of Ghazni of Afghanistan to record about the people he conquered. Mahmud of Ghazni ruled from 997 to 1030 AD. His reign of control spanned over parts of Central Asia, Iran and north western part of subcontinent. He raided India almost every year and targeted the wealth of temples, including that of Somnath, Gujarat. Al Biruni authored Kitab Al Hind.Al Biruni's account of India commends the learning of the Hindus in religion, philosophy, mathematics and astronomy.
