An isotonic solution refers to two solutionshaving the same osmotic pressure across a semipermeable membrane. This state allows for the free movement of water across the membrane without changing the concentration of solutes on either side. AP Chemistry: Help and Review / Science Courses.

if the medium had exactly the same water concentration as the cell , there will be no net movement of water across the cell membrane. this is called isotonic solution
