Calcutta Madrasa was
established to facilitate the studies of Islamic, Persian, and Arabic law. It
also intended to focus on oriental learning and retaining the ancient practices
of the country under the British rule. The institute was set up in October 1780
by the then Governor General Warren Hastings at Baithakkhana near Sealdah
located in Calcutta. In 1827, It shifted to its present base at Wellesley Square.
